“He came as a witness to testify concerning that light,
so that through Him all men might believe.”
John 1:7
Jesus’ earthly cousin, John, came to the Jordan River to
call the people of Israel
to repent from their sins and to be baptized in water to seal their
repentance. John preached that Jesus, the
Light of God, was coming, and He would give all people the opportunity to
believe in God and be filled with His Holy Spirit. John stated clearly that he was not the
chosen one, the expected Messiah, but that the Messiah, the Light of God, was
coming. John gave witness to what he understood
and believed, and he did not add anything to the message God had given him. He didn’t embellish nor did he exaggerate,
rather, he spoke the truth as he knew it.
His whole life – what he did and how he acted – was consistent with the
words he spoke. He was truly a man of
integrity.
Is my life a witness that communicates the Light of God
to the world around me? Or, is what I do
or how I act communicating a different message from the Gospel I speak? I realize that it is not just my words that
testify to what I believe, but it is how I live my life – how I conduct myself
when no one is looking. How I act speaks
much louder and clearer than what comes out of my mouth. John lived his life in a way that was
consistent with his message. It is my
hope that, as I live out my life, my actions match my words and my words are
full of God’s grace.
Questions to consider: What message is your life
communicating? Do your words and your
actions match? What does integrity mean
to you, and how do you live a life of integrity?
Prayer: Father, I desire to live a life that is fully
integrated with Your message of life. I
can only do this by Your grace and with Your power. Please empower me to be a man of
integrity. Amen.
